Tonight was an important one for the 2011 UQ Med Rugby squad, for many reasons.

 1. We were playing at the famous UQ Field 5B for the first time this year – thanks largely to the delays caused by massive floods earlier in the year.

2. The teams 2011 playing kits had arrived

3. The major sponsors were present – PKF Chartered Accountant’s Brian Sully, HLB Mann Judd’s Brendan Campbell, as was yours truly representing ProLENDING. Our thanks also goes to UQ Union, UQ Red Room and of course, Paddington Physio.
Coach Evan Nelson was part of the procession line, enjoying the formalities – but as always – was just as keen to get the boys hitting the tackle bags as soon as possible.

4. Last but by no means least – the UQ Med Rugby jersey’s were presented to each player by Rugby Legend and former Wallabies Captain, Ophthalmology Surgeon, and UQ Med Graduate, Dr Mark Loane. Mark spoke to the boys about his time as a Medical Student at UQ and about the history and traditions of this great University, his life changing ophthalmic work with the indigenous people of Cape York and his genuine love of the game of Rugby; it really was a privilege to have him at this evening’s presentation and everyone greatly appreciated his time along with Brian and Brendan’s time and generous sponsorship.

The UQMS President Andrew Hobson – a great supporter of Med Rugby – was present as was Nelson (Photographer extraordinaire), along with a great group of Med Rugby supporters to witness this special occasion. So with photos of all the players, sponsors and Coaching staff taken care of and with Dr Loane deciding to stay and cheer the boys on – it was time for Rugby!!

Our opposition – East’s Longhorns who unlike Med, have had a reasonably trouble free build up to tonight’s match. Med have had to sit out the past 2 Fridays due to scheduling changes and forced byes, but there would be no excuses as the boys were chomping at the bit to run out on our home ground at St Lucia, wearing the new colours. Judging by the reaction of the players and sponsors – the 2011 strip is an absolute winner – so hopefully a good sign of things to come this year!!! Thank you again to Sammy Morcom for his involvement with the new kits too – awesome job.

Right before kick-off, it was a fantastic sight to see the group in their new strips, huddled together and speaking with great passion and pride for this club, the University and the people involved (past and present). Tonight was a special night – and with the inspirational words of Dr Loane’s earlier address still stirring – we were ready….

AND what a start !!!!

Like the start of a Melbourne Cup – the entire team raced out of the blocks from the very first whistle and collided head on with a stunned East’s XV. With simple yet effective advice from Ev, Med just tackled and tackled and tackled. As soon as we had possession – it was “try-time”. The skill and talent on display made it extremely enjoyable viewing from the sidelines. Both the forwards and backs were dominating the majority of play, and what was the most pleasing aspect was the support play in attack and defence. Everyone was working hard and looking out for each other. No one was going to spoil our party tonight – an air of confidence surrounded play after play.

Med’s forwards were allowing the backs to run riot. We chanced our arm on several occasions and 9 time out of 10 they came off, leading to some well-constructed tries, and before we knew it, Med had crossed for 3 first half-tries. By the time the Gatorade was brought out, UQ were leading 19 points to nil. Dr Loane had seen enough to be suitably impressed, and asked to keep him in the loop regarding future games.

The second half opened up again and not only were the tries coming thick and fast thanks to some amazing backline raids – but our defensive line again, held out a much improved opposition attack for the next 35minutes. In the end Med had scored seven unanswered tries and kicked 5 excellent conversions… in the word’s of Seinfeld’s George Castanza – “we’re back baby, we’re back!!” Final score: Med 45 – Easts Nil. This was a magnificent effort and given the importance and significance of the evening – a well deserved result for UQ Med Rugby.

So with the beers handed out, the team song sung and 3 cheers given to all and sundry – the entire group felt pretty good about their achievements tonight and deservedly so.

Congratulations to everyone – a convincing win and a brilliant night.

Cheers & Go Med!!
